It was clear from the early age of 9; after saving my nickels and dimes and buying my first pony that my life was meant to be with horses and horse people. We did Gymkhanas to Pony Club Rallies in the 60’s; on to the Hunter Jumper “A” Circuit, 70’s, in the Northwest our folks made sure my sisters and I were responsible for our horses. Barn management has always been part of my life.
Moving to California in 79 I got to know the horse community in Santa Barbara by working at Jedlicka’s Saddlery. Becoming the head buyer of tack and English apparel gave me exposure to all the horse equipment you could dream of!
I started managing small private barns then and hauling horses commercially. Teaching horses to load in trailers is one of those great skills that often comes in handy.
As and active member of the SB chapter of CDS (California Dressage Society) I took my turn as president and loved working at our dressage shows.
As my son Graham, got into soccer instead of horses we shifted gears a bit. In the 90’s my business partner Cia Pierpont created the first riding leggings and we took Equestrian Designs from the horse world into the fashion world. We have since sold the company but it still makes wonderful “better women’s sportswear”.
Being introduced to Foxhunting around this time returned me to active riding. Becoming the Honorary Secretary and also Whipping-In has been most rewarding. SYVH (Santa Ynez Valley Hounds) goes out on some of the most beautiful ranches in Santa Barbara County. As a current member I am happy to share more information with anyone interested in this delightful sport.
So you will see me on Blaze, my little hunt horse out in those beautiful hills around Cañada Larga Ranch!
